Job Summary:

The Special Education Paraprofessional is a class assistant teacher with responsibilities assigned to assist a teacher in special education settings by serving as a source of additional learning support to the special need student. The Special Education Paraprofessional assists in the instruction of individual students or small groups in activities designed to promote educational, social and physical growth needed to achieve the skill level as identified in each student’s Individual Education Program (IEP).

Job Objective: The objective of the Special Education Paraprofessional is to provide high standard of care and instruction to children with special needs and demonstrates understanding of basic knowledge of special education and support services.

Reports to:  Assigned Classroom Teacher and/or Program Manager/Principal

Job Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists the classroom teacher in planning and preparing materials for individual students and group activities.
  2. Assist in the implementation of instructional programs for students under the supervision of the Classroom Teacher and/or the Principal.
  3. Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher and alert the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  4. Implements therapeutic programs and behavior intervention techniques under the direction of the Therapist, Behavior Services Director and Classroom Teacher.
  5. Assist students with meals, snacks and drinks while implementing any prescribed feeding programs.
  6. Maintains accurate records on all students assigned to the program and maintains regular attendance records.
  7. Instructs and assists students in personal care and hygiene in addition to maintaining a clean, safe and stimulating environment for students.
  8. Assists in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior; documenting activities and progress and supporting student’s Individualized Education Plan goals by assisting the teacher in evaluating student progress to meet IEP goals.
  9. Assists teacher in the utilization of classroom equipment and materials.
  10. Performs related duties, special assignments and projects as required by the Assigned Classroom Teacher and/or Principal.
