Purpose of Job

The Production Manager is responsible for the safe refining and packing of the refinery’s output in accordance with the agreed production plan.  The plan has quality, quantity and cost aspects, all of which must be achieved whilst adhering to the legal requirements of Bahrain and to the internal Health and Safety requirements of the company.  To do that, he or she must apply a thorough understanding of the refinery plant and the processes that are operated therein, watching trends and taking appropriate action to mitigate or enhance them as necessary.

The Production Manager must manage a large team with a wide range of skills, experience and educational standards.

Objectives and Tasks

  • Ensure that the refinery operates in a safe manner in the best interests of all stakeholders :
  • Helps establish and then enforce safe working practices for all persons on site, drawing on the expertise of the company’s Health and Safety Manager to do so;
  • Ensures that suitable personal protection equipment and all other necessary safety equipment is available at all times for his/her staff and any visiting persons;
  • Ensures that all areas of the refinery are kept clean and tidy;
  • Produce sugar within the operating budget in accordance with an agreed production plan :
  • Ensures that he/she understands the agreed production plan and his/her role in achieving it, remaining ready to adjust his/her thinking as when the plan is changed;

  • Ensures that all of the necessary raw materials, process chemicals and packing materials are available at the correct quality, in sufficient quantity and at the optimum price by drawing on the services of the company’s procurement department;
  • Ensures that all of the production plant is maintained and available for use at the correct capacity by drawing on the services of the Chief Engineer and his/her department;
  • Agrees individual production related objectives with his/her supervisors and ensures that each has all of the inputs and resources necessary to achieve those objectives;
  • Ensures that he/she is fully aware of any issues affecting production or operating costs and adjusts or authorises adjustments to operating conditions and/or equipment parameters in order to enhance production;
  • Build and then manage the departmental operations team :
  • Agrees an initial manning plan with the Refinery Manager and then regularly updates that over time;
  • Recruits the members of the team in close liaison with the Administration / Human Resources Manager;
  • Provides the leadership required for such a team, including good communication, sensible delegation, the development of a succession plan and the establishment plus administration of a discipline procedure;
  • Develops the members of the team reporting to him/her, identifying suitable training actively seeking opportunities for obtaining that training;
  • Support the obtaining and then maintenance of appropriate certifications :
  • Ensures that the areas of the refinery under his/her control are kept clean and tidy at all times;
  • Ensures that all HACCP audit recommendations are fully complied with;
  • Undertakes whatever assignments are given under the various certification plans;
  • Prepare and maintain a contingency plan for the refinery and its operations :
  • Agrees with his/her staff the procedures required to ensure that the operations department is adequately manned at all times;

  Inter Office Relations

Direct communication with Chief Engineer, Technical Manager, Health and Safety Manager, Laboratory Manager and Quality Assurance Manager.  Frequent meetings with the Human Resources department.

Key Competences

Qualifications : at least a university degree in chemical / process / sugar engineering or a related science;

Experience : at least 15 years experience in sugar production is required with 5 years of that at international level;  previous experience in a similar position plus a sound knowledge of sugar refining are essential;

Training : training in plant and operational safety plus team leadership is essential;  training in budget preparation and cost management is required;  training in the basics of financial systems and practices would be useful;

Skills : a good command of written and spoken English is essential, as are good management skills;  the full range of skills implied by the qualification and experience are also essential;
