Curatorial Assistant

The Curatorial assistant provides support to Curators and Head of Collections in managing collections and exhibitions of artefacts or works of art. This includes dealing with the acquisition and procurement of objects, care and display of items with the aim of informing and educating the public. The Curatorial assistant is expected to: demonstrate and understanding of museum field and its key players (artists, curators, collectors, galleries, art institutions and donors); gather and analyze art historical and scholarly texts, visual and object location information, and budgetary data, compiled in order to initiate and implement exhibitions.

Duties:

  • Responsible for a collection of artefacts or works of art;
  • Processing acquisition of objects of interest to the museum or gallery;
  • Cataloguing acquisitions and keeping records;
  • Carrying out background research and writing, biographic and bibliographic material, wall labels, gallery guide texts, educational materials, and exhibition fact sheets.
  • Assisting with installation and display, de-installation and shipping of objects
  • Collaborating with other Museum components, such as education, communications, marketing and conservation;
  • Organizing and following-up guided tours with voluntary groups, the community and industry (including schools and other community groups),
  • This position will report directly to the Curators.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in The humanities (Museum studies, Fine arts, Classical studies, History and  Islamic studies, Anthropology and Social studies), Natural studies (Biology, Geology, Natural sciences); or an equivalent combination of education and job related experience.

Required Experience:

At least 12 months of work experience in museum/gallery/library/archive is crucial (it may also be through an internship or voluntary).

Required Skills:

Excellent communication skills (both oral and written, because writing and editing texts, emailing, and presentations are a major part of the job). Besides, accuracy, meeting deadlines, team working, multi-tasking approach, strong motivation and willing to learn. Preferential knowledge of Arabic Language.
