2.0 RESPONSIBLE FOR: Nursing Personnel in assigned unit
3.0 JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the supervision and management of the assigned unit; organizing, coordinating and planning for its hours of operation including staff development, application of standards of practice, and adherence to the related Nursing and Hospital policies. The major focus of a MANAGER is in assuring the delivery of quality nursing care on the unit; contributions are also made to the overall development of the Nursing
4.0 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees and co-ordinates the patients′ plan of care and monitors the
multidisciplinary activities to help ensure quality in patient care.
Ensures nursing care activities are provided in a manner that matches the nursing skills with patients′ needs and acuity levels.
Evaluates nursing care and practice through rounds, patient observation, documentation and Performance Improvement activities, taking action based upon clinical judgment and knowledge of current practice
standards.
Organizes the flow of information to ensure effective communication with staff regarding patient care, standards of care, and changing operational methods, policies and procedures.
Acts as a role model for professional nursing practice, interdisciplinary collaboration, effective and efficient use of systems and responsible use of approved lines of communication.
Determines and makes provision for the ongoing education of staff within the unit and mentors senior staff to guide their development as charge nurses
Collaborates with manager on implementation or revisions to standards or procedures.
Orientates, evaluates, and takes corrective action with staff to maximise the abilities of assigned nursing, utilising the assistance of nurse educator or divisional supervisor as needed.
Develops a schedule that ensures staffing needs are met according to approved staff levels, adjusting the distribution to meet the needs and acuity of patients, seeking approval for overtime before changing staff assignments.
Acts to provide a safe environment for patients and staff, reporting problems to the appropriate Supervisor/Department Head.
Responds quickly to patient or family concerns, communicating in a timely manner with the Divisional Director and CNO as needed
Participates, implements and monitors the Performances Improvement program on the unit, including development of unit objectives, compliance with safety regulations or programs and the incident reporting process.
Collaborates with appropriate medical and allied health care staff to help foster a positive working environment on the unit, striving to have positive interdepartmental relations
Assesses staff competency and then completes probation and annual performance appraisals, reviewing those with below average or excellent scores with the Divisional Director prior to being finalized, collaborating on disciplinary action above a verbal reprimand with the Divisional
Supervisor
Identifies those for commendation, promotion, or special assignment in collaboration with the Divisional Director
Determines the ongoing development of nursing personnel within the division, coordinating with educators the methods and opportunities for meeting those needs.
Responds quickly and appropriately to patient or family requests or concerns
Implements and modifies, to
EDUCATION AND LICENSURE: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing and holds (and maintains) a current Nursing license of good standing in country of origin.
Minimum Bachelors degree or specialized advanced education (eg. post graduate course in designated specialty) or equivalent preferred.
For MOH purposes, there must be no break in experience in the 2 years immediate pre-hire
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 3 years progressive post-graduate experience, of which 2
have been as a head nurse or equivalent involved with staff assessment, unit organization, and overseeing standards of practice preferred
2 years clinical experience in the assigned specialty. (L&D to be a
registered midwife) preferred
Proficiency in spoken and written English
Proficient in writing procedures and familiar with use of computers
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE: Previous experience in a multi-cultural environment is desirable.
Thorough knowledge of current nursing management practices
Demonstrated background in collaborative relationships with a wide range of personnel
