Organizational Relationships:A Laboratory Technician reports to the Senior Chemist for the laboratory section. The position also involves a functional relationship to the Laboratory Manager.
Primary Objectives:To ensure that timely and quality results are produced.
Position Duties and Scope:The Laboratory Technician is responsible for: •Ensuring that analytical procedures and associated tasks for which he/she is responsible are conducted in accordance with the Laboratories Quality Work Instructions and Standard Operating Procedures.•Organising designated tasks to maximise daily efficiencies.•Ensuring that all tasks and analyses are performed within the timeframe set down by the Senior Chemist and the relevant analysis standard.•The reporting of results as required by the Senior Chemist.•Highlighting anomalies in results, sample type and sample behaviour to the Senior Chemist.•Calibrating equipment as required by the Senior Chemist and the laboratories quality procedures.•Controlling consumable stock required for the tasks performed.•Performing housekeeping duties as required.•Other duties, as requested, relating to this position.
Quality Responsibilities:The Laboratory Technician has the following quality responsibilities:•To ensure that all analysis and duties are performed in accordance with ALS quality procedures.•To ensure that only calibrated equipment is used and instrument maintenance is up to date.
Occupational Health & Safety Responsibilities:The Laboratory Technician has the following safety responsibilities:•To be familiar with the safety requirements as set out in the safety manual.•To have a knowledge of and comply with the company safety policy.•To notify and/or rectify any unsafe practice acknowledged by any member of staff.
The Laboratory Technician should possess:•An understanding of Good Laboratory Practise as applied to quality and safety. •A genuine interest in the science field.•Reasonable organisational skills.•Ability to work in a team environment.•General computer literacy.•Demonstrated ability to provide attention to detail.•Diploma of Degree in a science related discipline – preferable.•Previous laboratory experience – preferable.
