Senior Chemist - Inorganics / Organics / Microbio

Organizational Relationships:
The Senior Chemist reports to the Laboratory Manager and is responsible for the supervision and management of Chemists and Laboratory Technicians within the section.

Primary Objectives:
Supervision of the laboratory to ensure financial, service, data quality and OH&S targets are achieved for the specific section.

Position Duties and Scope:
The Senior Chemist is responsible for:

•Supervising staff within the appropriate section and allocation of section work priorities.
•Ensuring the section is suitably equipped and staffed and using approved methodologies to provide a quality service to the clients.
•Optimising turnaround time for samples whilst ensuring the highest quality of results is achieved and maintained.
•Checking and approving outgoing analytical data.
•Monitoring that client expectations and analytical holding times are achieved by the laboratory.
•Ensuring the efficient running of the laboratory, advising the Laboratory Manager of possible ways to increase productivity and efficiency through equipment upgrades, method enhancements or implementation of new technologies.
•Ensuring all staff within the section are adequately trained for the analyses they are performing.
•Providing technical expertise toward methodology changes which affect operations within the laboratory.
•Advising the Laboratory Manager on the proposed purchase of capital equipment.
•Ensuring the efficient usage of chemicals and consumables in the laboratory.
•Ensuring adequate stocks of chemicals and consumables are maintained.
•Other duties, as requested, relating to this position.

Quality Responsibilities:
The Senior Chemist has the following quality responsibilities:
•To ensure that all analysis and duties are performed in accordance with ALS quality procedures.
•To ensure that only calibrated equipment and instruments are used.
•Ensuring instrument repairs and maintenance schedules are completed as per the defined schedule.
•Assessing the results of QA/QC audits and implementing improvements as required.
•Participation in the in-house method auditing program.

Occupational Health & Safety Responsibilities:
The Senior Chemist has the following Occupational Health and Safety responsibilities:
•To be familiar with the safety requirements as set out in the safety manual.
•To have a knowledge of the company safety policy.
•To notify and/or rectify any unsafe practice acknowledged by any ALS staff member.
•Ensuring all staff are adequately trained in the quality, procedural and safety aspects of the laboratory.
•Ensuring the workplace is kept clean.
•Ensuring that staff dispose of waste in the prescribed manner.

Skills

•Tertiary qualifications - Bachelor of Science (Chemistry preferable).
•3-5 years previous laboratory experience (Gas Chromatography or ICP experience preferable).
•General computer literacy skills.
•Good organizational skills.
•Good communication skills.
•Previous supervisory experience – preferable.
•An understanding of ISO17025 and its requirements – preferable.
