Organizational Relationships: The Laboratory Manager reports to the General Manager – ALS Saudi Arabia and is responsible for the supervision and management of the laboratories Senior Chemists, Chemists and Laboratory Technicians.
Primary Objectives: Management of the laboratory to ensure financial, service, data quality and OH&S targets are achieved. Managing business growth through quality service.Development of working relationships with key clientele. Communication of laboratory service and quality items with clientele as appropriate.
Position Duties and Scope: The Laboratory Manager is responsible for: •Ensuring the laboratory is suitably equipped and staffed and using approved methodologies to provide a quality service to the clients.•Optimizing turnaround time for samples whilst ensuring accurate and timely results are achieved and maintained.•Delegating signatories to check and approve final reports prior to dispatch with a system for senior staff to take corrective action where necessary.•Ensuring staff members have the knowledge and skills to perform their roles competently. •Continually assess the laboratory to increase productivity and efficiency through equipment upgrading, method enhancements and implementation of new technology.•Advising senior management on the purchase of capital equipment and to authorise the purchase of consumables.•Preparing, in consultation with the General Manager – ALS Saudi Arabia, the annual operating budget and ensuring that staff have the resources and ability to meet the targets as specified in that budget.•Ensuring the efficient running and the overall administrative coordination of the Laboratory. This will include optimizing staff numbers, cross training staff and minimizing maintenance costs.•The development of working relationships with key clientele.•Communication with clients relating to work being undertaken by the laboratory.•Other duties related to the successful operation and administration of the Laboratory, as requested by the General Manager – ALS Saudi Arabia.
The Laboratory Manager has the following quality responsibilities:•Ensuring that the quality of analytical data produced is maintained at a level that meets or exceeds company and market acceptable standards.•To ensure that the laboratory has a quality system for the calibration of equipment and instruments.•Ensuring the laboratory has a system in place for the recording of Client Complaints and Corrective Action Requests.•Assessing the results of QA/QC audits and implementing improvements as required.•Ensuring laboratory equipment is of an appropriate standard.
Occupational Health & Safety Responsibilities:The Laboratory Manager has the following Occupational Health and Safety responsibilities:•To be familiar with the safety requirements as set out in the safety manual.•To provide the necessary equipment and environment to ensure safety in the laboratory.•To rectify any unsafe laboratory practice.
•Genuine leadership abilities •A strong customer focus.•Tertiary qualifications - Bachelor of Science (Chemistry preferable).•5-7 years previous laboratory experience (1-3 years in a senior role).•General computer literacy skills.•Excellent organizational skills.•Excellent written and verbal communication skills.•An understanding of ISO17025 and its requirements.•An understanding of basic business principles.
